Registration Status

Do I have the right to vote in Indiana?

You do, if you are a U.S. citizen and resident of Indiana, and

  1. Are at least 18 years old on or before the date of the next general election, and
  2. Have lived in your voting precinct at least 30 days before the election, and
  3. Are not currently in prison, convicted of a crime, and
  4. Are registered to vote (before the deadline).

When and how do I register to vote?

You can register at any time except the 28 days before an election (by April 6 for the primary; October 5 for the general election).


Do I need to check my registration?

It's always good to check your registration two months before any election.

  • Go to indianavoters.in.gov and click "Check Voting Status," or
  • Call the Monroe County Clerk's office (812-349-2690).
When checking your voter registration:
  • Make sure your street address (and mailing address if different) is correct;
  • Make sure your name conforms to your state-issued ID;
  • Make sure your registration is current.
  • Submit updates if you have moved or changed your name.

Voting Options

How do I get ready to vote?
  • Decide if you will vote early in person, vote in person on Election Day, vote by mail-in absentee ballot, or vote by travel board.
  • Find your precinct on the Monroe County Voter Information Map.

  • For the primary election, Indiana requires voters to choose between voting as a Democrat or as a Republican. In the general election, you can vote across party lines for any candidate on the ballot.
  • Go to the Monroe County Voter Registration page and click on either DEM. 2026 PRIMARY SAMPLE BALLOTS or REP. 2026 PRIMARY SAMPLE BALLOTS.
  • This link leads you to a pdf file of over 100 pages. Search on your precinct name to find the ballot for your precinct.

How do I vote by mail-in absentee ballot?

To obtain an application, go to indianavoters.in.gov and click “Vote by Mail or Traveling Board.” Follow the instructions on this page to download the form, which contains the complete list of reasons a voter may vote by mail, including:

  • If you can’t get to your polling place between 6 am and 6 pm on election day, or
  • If you are 65 or older, or
  • If you are disabled.

Your Vote by Mail ballot application must be received online or at Election Central by April 25 for the primary, October 24 for the general election.


How do I vote by traveling board?

If disabled, homebound, or ill, you can request a bi-partisan traveling board to come to your location. To obtain an application:

  • To obtain an application, go to indianavoters.in.gov and click “Vote by Mail or Traveling Board.” Follow the instructions on this page to download the form, which contains the list of reasons a voter may vote by traveling board.
  • Your Vote by Traveling Board application must be received online or at Election Central by noon on May 4 for the primary, noon on November 2 for the general election.

Voting in Person

What kind of ID do I need to vote in person?

For either early or Election Day voting a voter must present an ID that meets these criteria:

  • Display the voter’s photo, and
  • Display the voter’s name (must conform with the voter registration record), and
  • Display an expiration date and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (November 5, 2024), and be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government (University IDs are not included).

How do I vote early in person?
  • Vote at Election Operations, 501 N. Morton Street, Suite 101, Bloomington. The early voting location, at the north end of the Showers Building, is different from previous years.
  • Primary election early voting dates are April 7 until noon on May 4.
  • General election early voting dates are October 8 until noon on November 2.
  • Check daily hours at indianavoters.in.gov and click "Voting Location."

How do I vote in person on Election Day?
  • Go to your designated polling place and be in line to vote before 6 p.m. Find your polling place at indianavoters.in.gov and click "Voting Location."
