NAACP event Sunday Jan. 25

This convening builds on years of community truth-telling and organizing—from the November 2023 Founders Day conversation with Vivian Bridgewaters-Gray, which named the urgent need to eliminate discrimination and expand belonging in our schools, to the October 2024 forum, 70 Years Post-Brown: Looking to the Past, Transforming the Future, which challenged us to move from remembrance to responsibility.

We gather now because the conditions that gave rise to Freedom Schools are returning. Across Indiana, the fight for accurate history, critical thinking, civics education, and safe, well-resourced schools is once again urgent—not only in K–12 classrooms, but in higher education. At Indiana University, DEI initiatives have been dismantled, areas of study eliminated, and governance consolidated under a Board of Trustees overseen by the Governor of Indiana.

January 25 is a call to revive Freedom Schools as action—not memory. To rebuild education that tells the truth, prepares young people to lead, and returns power to community. Join us as we teach freedom again—together.
